Types of OA Appointments
Officers of Administration appointments fall into two categories:
- Renewable fixed-term, non-tenure related. These appointments are held by
OAs who serve in administrative positions and who do not hold tenure in
academic disciplines. These positions are customarily renewed annually, except
in situations where timely notice has been given.
- Fixed-term, annual renewal, non-tenure related. These appointments fill a short-term need, are of a non-regular nature, or are funded with non-recurring funds. Although they may be renewed annually, there is no expectation of renewal.
Within these two categories, terms and conditions of contracts vary based on the kind of work performed by the incumbent and type of funding for the position.
OAs are appointed on fixed-term contracts that are usually one year in length. Some higher level positions receive contracts of two years. Renewals or reappointments are generally for the same period, although performance or special organizational needs may dictate a shorter or longer period.
As a rule, administrative positions held by officers of administration do
not carry academic rank. In rare circumstances an exception may be made by the
appropriate vice president, based on unique job responsibilities and academic
credentials.
