This Human Resources Training Guide has been compiled for your convenience, so that faculty and other staff can plan ahead to attend training events throughout the year. While this schedule does not include every workshop that will be offered or describe every event in detail, it does cover the majority of workshops and training events scheduled and offered by Human Resources. Training announcements will continue to be sent out through campus mail and on e-mail as well as listed in some UO publications including "Inside Oregon."
Registration for workshops and training events is required, unless otherwise noted. To register for a particular workshop or training event, please call Human Resources at x6-3159. To register by e-mail, send your name, department, phone number, e-mail address, the training and date you wish to attend to Kayla Hinds, khinds@uoregon.edu. Space is limited for all events, so early registration is recommended. If for any reason you find that you cannot attend a workshop or training event for which you have registered, please call x6-3159 and let us know so that someone else can be permitted to go.
TRAINING BY REQUEST. Some workshops are available, upon request, to be done for your faculty and other staff. To request any of the following workshops for members of your faculty and staff, please call the Training Administrator, Cris Cullinan ( x6-2961, crisc@uoregon.edu). We will schedule a date and time with you, and ask you to arrange a location and other logistics. It is best to call at least 30 days before you plan to schedule a workshop, and earlier if at all possible. You can also call her if you have a training need that does not fit neatly inside an already described workshop session.
| If you are a person with a disability, and need an accommodation to attend any of the trainings or workshops listed, please call x6-3159, TTY x6-0852 |
UO CLASSIFIED STAFF TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE
In September 1996, Dan Williams, Vice-President for Administration, appointed an advisory
committee to advise on classified employee training and development issues. This committee
is comprised of classified employees and reports to the Vice President for Administration
through the Director of Human Resources. This committee, as well as other faculty and
staff groups and individuals, provide input and feedback on Human Resources' training. For
more information, contact Mandy Chong, Co-Chair at 6-0847, mchong@uoregon.edu; or
Nicole Nelson, Co-Chair at 6-0618, nnelson@uoregon.edu; or Linda King, Director of
Human Resources, at 6-2966.
Developed by the Classified Staff Training and Development Advisory Committee, this program brings together employees interested in sharing information or learning about a specific topic. Employees can learn more about their jobs, academic department activities and processes, available campus resources, and various computer software applications. Mentoring groups are established in the fall of each academic year and run for nine months.
The benefits of a mentoring group are many. Participants can learn about specialized aspects of university operations, changes in technology, or computer software applications in an administrative or academic department. More importantly, the learning occurs in a supportive, sharing environment with employees who face the same challenges.
If you are interested in finding out more about Mentoring Groups or have an idea for a group, please contact Mandy Chong, Co-Chair at 6-0847, mchong@uoregon.edu; or Nicole Nelson, Co-Chair at 6-0618, nnelson@uoregon.edu; or e-mail the committee at cstdac@uoregon.edu.
You can visit our website at http://www.uoregon.edu/~cstdac/ for our mentor group schedules. If you have questions, please call or email the facilitator of the group you are interested in attending.
MEMORANDUM (Excerpt)
TO: University Faculty and Staff
FROM: Lorraine Davis, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs
Linda King, Director of Human Resources
SUBJECT: EMPLOYEE PARTICIPATION IN UNIVERSITY CLASSES
As fall term approaches, we want to remind you that UO faculty and staff are encouraged to enroll in university classes and to take advantage of the staff fee rates if eligible. The university's educational mission extends to faculty and staff, as well as to students, as reflected in the attached UO policy on Staff Participation in Educational/Developmental Activities. Research has shown that when employees are given the opportunity to engage in new learning, productivity and morale rise.
Many employees are also university students admitted to academic programs and pursuing degrees. Others simply want to take classes for professional or personal enrichment without applying for a specific program. The latter group can take regular UO classes through the Community Education Program (maximum of 8 credits per term) at 346-5614. Staff fee rates apply to both kinds of enrollments (see below).
At this time when departments face increased workloads and decreased budgets, supervisors may be unable to allow an employee time off to pursue educational objectives. The attached policy statement includes suggestions which may help departments balance work loads and employee development activities.
